Hello 2018

I've been doing a lot of reflecting on this transition between 2017 and 2018. What does the beginning of a new year mean to you?

A time of excitement and anticipation for new adventures and explorations in the year ahead? Hopes of change and achieving longed for dreams? Thoughts and feelings of disappointment or satisfaction about the year just past? Relief that its the end of the festive season and all that involves? An ever growing list of resolutions that is reading increasingly like a menu of self punishment, or at best a list of undoability?!

In this mix of anticipation of the future, reflecting on the past and looking around at what changes to make, we can readily get busy with painting the picture of how we want life to be. What we might not pay so much attention to is what we might need to help us create this life we want most for ourselves, and really getting to understand what gets in the way.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has had similar hopes and made the same set of new year's resolutions year on year, only to find a few weeks in that the shine of the new has worn off as the demands of daily life mount up and familiar patterns of being creep in.

However you find yourself landing into 2018, I want to share with you my belief that prioritising support can make a significant difference in how we respond to the events in our lives and take steps towards what we need and want.

Support can take many forms, this might be time with people who care about us and who we enjoy being with, time in nature, nurturing creativity, pursuing activities that nourish and taking care of how we talk to ourselves and the beliefs we hold.

Individual therapy is another kind of support that is focused on you; your hopes, dreams, disappointments, frustrations, joys and sorrows. Sometimes there can be aspects of ourselves that are out of our awareness that can get in the way of us living the way we want to, having satisfying relationships and achieving our ambitions. In therapy, a space is created between you and your therapist to explore all aspects of what it is to be you in the world.

This focused attention can support a deeper kind of knowledge of and sensitivity to our whole being. A more fully grounded place from which to live out daily life, to reach for what we most long for and to make the kind of lasting, organic change that isn't dependent on a list made on the 1st of January.
